5 Ways to Create a Cosy Home for Autumn

5 Ways to Create a Cosy Home for Autumn

With the change in the season, and the little bit of chill in the air there is something about autumn that makes us want to hunker down, enjoy comfort food, and settle in for cosy nights at home. The cooler weather and new season TV, means we are spending more time indoors and turning our attention to our living spaces and making them as snug as possible.

Declutter

A new season feels like a natural time to do a little decluttering. The garden furniture has been stored away, and the holiday suitcases are back in the loft; it is the perfect time for an interior refresh. Even if you are not planning any big DIY projects having a quick declutter can help to reset the space allowing you to focus on interiors. Having a place for everything really does help keep your home streamlined and clutter free. A sideboard in the living room, a console in the hallway or a blanket box in the bedroom can help store things out of sight.

Adding Warmth

There are lots of clever ways to add warmth and cosiness to a space, painting in calm, earthy tones will instantly warm up a room. Adding artwork to the walls or shelving in an alcove can also create a cocooning feel.  If you have a spacious living room or an open plan kitchen and living space, then using a corner sofa will not only create a separate zone for watching TV and relaxing but it will create a cosy look. Our Tracy corner sofa is perfect for lounging and comes with plenty of snuggly cushions for all the family to lounge comfortably together. An accent chair in a different colour or texture can also look effective.

Layers of Texture

Creating softness with layers of texture, can be done with a few soft furnishings. Stacked cushions on a sofa, or draped throws over a bed or a chair in a reading nook all create a stylish textured and lived in look. Mix and match your cushions to incorporate different colours and fabrics like our Elston textured cushion cover or the Holbeck abstract cushion cover.

If you have hard flooring throughout your home, then area rugs will instantly warm up the space. Add a textured rug for a soft feel under foot like the Evedon cotton rug featuring a contemporary striped pattern. You can also bring in texture with footstools like our Penelope drum stool, which can also work as a side table.

Lighting & Candles

Lighting is a simple and effective way to create a cosy atmosphere. Using multiple forms of light in your space can create a cosy and inviting feel, perfect for autumnal evenings. Using wall lights and lamps in a living room rather than a bright ceiling light will help to create that cosy atmosphere. The Haveri hexagonal table lamp features a beautiful mango wood base and the string lampshade will bring warmth and texture to the room. Our textured lamps include the hand-crafted jute Sirana burnt orange lamp or the Chattendon boucle floor lamp. Try lamps at different heights and always opt for warm bulbs to create that soft glow. The addition of scented candles will create a homely feel, use them throughout your home for a welcoming space.

Accessories

Create an autumnal vignette with your favourite decorative accessories. Use shelves or a bookcase and style an intentional look with stacked books, candles, vases or trinket trays mixed with interesting objects. Styling pieces that are different heights will help create a more layered and thoughtful look without looking cluttered. You can include autumnal décor in your look such as pumpkin inspired pieces or dried foliage for a more seasonal look.
