How to Protect Garden Furniture During Winter
As the colder months approach, it’s time to think about how to care for your garden furniture to ensure it stays in excellent condition for years to come. With a few simple steps, you can protect your outdoor pieces from the elements and be ready to enjoy them again when spring arrives.
Invest in Protective Covers
Whether you have wooden garden furniture, rattan, or rope furniture, one of the easiest ways to protect your garden furniture is by using high-quality covers. These are designed to shield your furniture from rain, frost, and dirt. Our range of furniture covers will ensure every piece is protected and vary depending on the size you require from covers for bistro sets, to corner sofa covers and large cube furniture covers. Don’t forget to use a parasol cover to keep your parasol in pristine condition.
Store Accessories Safely
Clear away smaller items such as pots, lanterns, garden lighting and cushions to prevent damage during the winter months. If you have outdoor cushions and throws, wash them before storing them in a garden storage trunk, or in a summer house or garage to keep them protected and ready for next season.
Choose Low-Maintenance Materials
If you’re looking for furniture that requires minimal upkeep, consider investing in polypropylene chairs like our Wren chairs or synthetic rattan garden furniture. This weatherproof rattan material is designed to withstand the elements, making it a practical choice for year-round use. Our rattan cube sets are not only weather-resistant but they fit together neatly for compact storage and added protection.
Protecting Wooden Garden Furniture
All Laura James wooden garden furniture is crafted from strong and durable natural acacia wood. Although acacia wood is hard wearing, decay and moisture resistant there are still some things you can do to help protect it throughout the year. Ensure you clean up any spills or ring marks on the wood surface straight away, using mild detergent or a natural cleaning solution such as water with vinegar. Harsh chemicals in cleaning protects may damage the wood, the same goes for brushing or scrubbing too hard. Use a soft microfibre cloth to wipe the wood gently. You can find out more details on protecting acacia wood furniture in our care guide.
Clean & Secure Furniture
Before covering or storing your furniture, give it a thorough clean. Remove dirt and debris and ensure everything is dry to prevent mould or mildew. For outdoor rugs, shake off any dirt and store them inside.
If your garden is exposed to strong winds, make sure any lightweight furniture is in a sheltered spot or securely anchored to prevent it from blowing away.
By taking these steps, you’ll not only protect your garden furniture but also extend its lifespan, ensuring it remains a stylish and functional part of your outdoor space for years to come.
